As featured in John Bailey's video "Tench on the float". Handmade Windbeater Tench Floats – Traditional Lift Method Floats Few forms of stillwater fishing are as exciting, visual and effective as the traditional lift method. Watching a float slowly rise, slide across the surface, or confidently bury beneath the water as a tench lifts the anchor shot from the lake bed remains one of the great thrills of classic coarse fishing. These handmade Windbeater floats are designed specifically for that style of fishing. Built using traditional natural materials and proven design principles refined over generations of anglers, they are ideal for targeting tench, crucian carp, bream and carp on stillwaters, estate lakes, gravel pits and sheltered waters where precise bait presentation and stable float control are essential. Each float is individually handmade by Ian Lewis using a carefully balanced combination of bamboo, balsa and cork. The buoyant balsa body is mounted low on the stem, helping the float remain remarkably stable in windy conditions while minimising the effects of surface drift and undertow. This low-slung body design is where the “Windbeater” name originates — these floats are specifically intended to combat the frustrating drag and line bow often encountered when fishing traditional lift rigs on breezy stillwaters. Unlike conventional wagglers that can allow a large belly of line to form on the surface, a properly set-up Windbeater float fishes with most of the stem submerged beneath the water. This pins the line below the influence of strong surface winds, helping keep both bait and anchor shot nailed firmly in position on the lake bed. The result is superb bite registration and a remarkably stable presentation. At the top of the float sits a highly visible 10 mm cork sight bob, available in fluorescent red, orange, yellow, black or white. Combined with the distinctive black and white bands on the bamboo stem, these floats provide exceptional bite indication at distance and make classic lift bites beautifully easy to read in varying light and ripple conditions. Each float is finished with a handmade eye formed from marine-grade 316 stainless steel wire for outstanding durability and corrosion resistance. Like all Handmade Fishing Floats by Ian Lewis products, these floats are built to last. While many modern plastic floats become brittle, crack or weaken over time, the natural materials used in these Windbeaters create floats with exceptional strength, resilience and longevity. Many customers regularly comment on just how much abuse these floats will tolerate season after season — making them an investment that more than repays itself over time. How The Lift Method Works The lift method is one of the most effective traditional techniques for catching specimen tench, crucians, bream and carp. The float is intentionally over-shotted using a larger “anchor” shot positioned close to the hook and resting on the lake bed. The rig is then fished slightly over-depth so the buoyant sight bob sits delicately on the surface while most of the float remains submerged beneath the water. When a fish picks up the bait and lifts the anchor shot, pressure is released from the float and the sight bob rises dramatically from the water — often laying flat or sliding away confidently across the surface before submerging. Few bite indications in angling are more exciting or easier to read. Because the bait is effectively anchored in place, the rig almost fishes itself once correctly set up. This creates an incredibly effective “fail-safe” presentation for wary stillwater fish, particularly when targeting large tench and bream in windy conditions where undertow and drifting line can otherwise ruin presentation. Windbeater floats are particularly effective: On estate lakes and traditional stillwaters In shallow to medium-depth water For fishing up to around 10–12 feet deep In windy conditions with surface tow When fishing static or semi-static baits For big tench, crucians, bream and carp Available Sizes 4BB – 7 inches 4AAA – 8 inches 3SSG – 9 inches 4SSG – 10 inches Each larger float increases by approximately one inch in length, allowing improved visibility and stability in more demanding conditions. These floats are supplied unloaded and are designed to be shotted traditionally using split shot positioned to suit the conditions and depth being fished.
